Going green

A little while back my friend Wadge tipped over a pot of soil that had once been a plant, but was now an ashtray. He was fumbling around trying to get out of the hammock, in a somewhat wasted state, and pulled it down all over the floor. Give him a break, it was a friday night after a long week. and he was good enough to clean it up the next day...

The act was largely forgotten, until a couple of weeks later a small sprout merged from the soil. We figured there was a good chance it would be mary of sorts, so warmed to it and took delight in watching it develop into a small plant. Then one day my flatmate Tim and I were chatting and we decided it was time to re-pot the pot. Give it a more formal space. No, it wouldn't have flowered, being a bit late in the season, but it was cute.

Anyway, long story short, my cat Miu chewed it down to virtually nothing in the time it took us to try find a spade. I was mad. She got a hiding. Days later the bugger was back in the game, but Miu has been pruning her every time a new leaf forms. I had to let go. It's now back to ashtrayville. The weed keeps going...

Moral of the story? Life can actually be created by some stoned and drunken bastard fumbling his way out of a hammock. Yes, and then pretty much destroyed by a hungry pussy.

You should keep that in mind

Great track, cool vid...

Still life with comfort zone

A few reasons why I haven't been drawing (or socialising, or blogging, or speaking) enough lately.

Great waves

Dirty Three is a great Oz band. They're mostly instrumental, but this song with Chan Marshall (mmmmm) is on a whole other level.

Pure wizardry.

Figures

Thursday morning's figure drawing session... H and 4B in A4 Moleskine... Not the best session. Omitted a few. I get a bit thrown off by two people. Especially when they're so enthusiastic as this pair. I think they practice at home.

Headphones...

Mogwai started a monthly podcast last week. Some wicked tracks on there from Four Tet, Fuck Buttons and Errors. Check it out.

And here's a track from Laura I found that there's not much chance you'll have heard before:

Mandalas don't have to be round.

Picked up a calculation pad, a set of Artline 200's and a book on Jung last night...

Happy valentine's day :P

R.I.P. Uncle Phil

I thought we'd go all the way to sign-off together, but all you ever met was your maker. So enthused to gather the innocent, meandering minds of new Big Brand employees and focus their glassy eyes on the world of cellular salesmanship, you never saw coming the focus-group smiles and head-shine double-glances that would forebear your now-overplayed demise. It could have been the comb over. It could have been the tache. It could've been the underlying creepiness sadly precedes an old man that is just too damn happy. What could he hiding?

Wisdom... Not for mass consumption.

Visualising the modes... Lydian

This is where you can see how subtle the differences between the musical modes can be. The Lydian mode scale illustrated below is almost identical to the 1st posted Ionian (natural major scale), except that the 4th interval (dotted green wave) is augmented (or a semi-tone sharper), resulting in a sound altogether unique.
The next on my list is the Mixolydian, which is also only very subtly different from the natural major. How reluctant the human mind can be to grasp subtlety. We're all 99.9% genetically identical, 0.01% different. Yet that 0.01% difference makes up probably 99% of our perception of each other. No wonder we're all crazy.

Killed by potmouse the destroyer last weekend. Your tethered and sun-kissed sinu will be sorely missed. 2007-2010 RIP

Since it's a Sunday, and there's death in the air, a verse from the 'Good' Book...

Exodus 32:27 (New International Version)

Then he said to them, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.' "

New year is so last week.

Somewhere a permanent marker is dribbling streams of quasi-consciousness all over a block of primed canvas.

Welcome back to reality?

Best birthday ever!

MERRRRRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE :)

Hope you all got what you wanted!

Far from an insult, this is an enlivening portrayal, celebrating the immense depth of the man that was (apparently) Jesus Christ. Bless his vast bowel.

If you're offended, you should probably calm down, then click here. and here. And here too.

Then pray for me. I like that. It gives me a tingly feeling.

Visualising the modes... Phrygian

Four weeks later, and one tone up from the Dorian, I finally bring you the the Phrygian, which is essentially a natural minor with a flat 2nd (orange):

Sometime in the near future I will bring the Lydian.

This is Africa time.

Last figure drawing of the year

Still haven't got back to the art shop, so it's H and 4B pencils in A4 Moleskine. Cropped in to show my somewhat sketchy (pun intended) line work.

Happy Holidays! Travel safe, and remember: Christmas is not really Christmas unless you've been slapped by a nun.
